Delightful and cozy matcha cinnamon rolls that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons matcha powder
  • ½ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of flour, sugar, yeast, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, and egg.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until combined.
  4. Add the matcha powder and mix until incorporated.
  5. Gradually add the remaining ½ cup of flour, kneading the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  6. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle (about 12×18 inches).
  8. Spread the softened butter over the dough.
  9. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle evenly over the buttered dough.
  10. Starting from one long side, tightly roll the dough into a log.
  11. Cut the log into 12 equal pieces and place them in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  12. Cover with a towel and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  13. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  14. Bake the rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.
  15. While the rolls are baking, prepare the icing by whisking together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  16. Once the rolls are done, drizzle the icing over them while they are still warm.
  17. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the filling.
  • You can also substitute almond milk for a dairy-free version.
  • For a fun twist, try adding chopped nuts or dried fruit to the filling before rolling.
