Chocolate Maritozzi Italian Cream Buns are irresistible sweet buns filled with a creamy mascarpone mixture and chocolate chips.

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the cream)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each bun. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
- While the buns are cooling, prepare the filling. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until well combined.
- Once the buns are cooled, slice them in half horizontally. Fill each bun generously with the cream mixture and sprinkle chocolate chips inside.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
Notes
- For a citrus twist, add the zest of one orange or lemon to the cream filling.
- Substitute chocolate chips with fresh berries or chopped nuts for a different flavor profile.
