Description

Chocolate Maritozzi Italian Cream Buns are irresistible sweet buns filled with a creamy mascarpone mixture and chocolate chips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the cream)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and instant yeast. Mix well to combine.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between each bun. Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
  6. While the buns are cooling, prepare the filling. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gently fold in the mascarpone cheese, powdered sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract until well combined.
  7. Once the buns are cooled, slice them in half horizontally. Fill each bun generously with the cream mixture and sprinkle chocolate chips inside.
  8. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For a citrus twist, add the zest of one orange or lemon to the cream filling.
  • Substitute chocolate chips with fresh berries or chopped nuts for a different flavor profile.
