Ingredients You’ll Need
Before we dive into the baking magic, let’s gather our ingredients! This Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting is all about simple, accessible items that you probably already have in your pantry. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour: This is the backbone of our cake, giving it structure and that delightful crumb. If you’re looking for a gluten-free option, you can swap it out for a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar: Sweetness is key! This sugar not only sweetens the cake but also helps it rise. If you want to cut back on sugar, consider using coconut sugar or a sugar substitute, but keep in mind it may alter the texture slightly.
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder: This is where the chocolatey goodness comes from! Opt for high-quality cocoa for a richer flavor. If you’re feeling adventurous, try using dark cocoa powder for an even deeper taste.
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder: This little powerhouse helps our cake rise to fluffy perfection. Make sure it’s fresh for the best results!
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda: Another leavening agent that works in tandem with the baking powder. It’s essential for that light texture we all love.
- 1 teaspoon salt: A pinch of salt enhances all the flavors in the cake. Don’t skip it, or your cake might taste a bit flat!
- 2 large eggs: Eggs add moisture and richness, helping to bind everything together. If you’re looking for an egg-free option, you can use flax eggs (1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed mixed with 2.5 tablespoons of water per egg).
- 1 cup whole milk: This adds moisture and richness to the cake. If you’re dairy-free, almond milk or oat milk works just as well!
- ½ cup vegetable oil: Oil keeps the cake moist and tender. You can substitute it with melted coconut oil or even applesauce for a healthier twist.
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract: This adds a lovely depth of flavor. If you’re out of vanilla, almond extract can be a delightful alternative.
- 1 cup boiling water: This might seem unusual, but adding boiling water helps to bloom the cocoa powder, intensifying the chocolate flavor. Trust me, it’s a game-changer!
- 1 cup finely chopped hazelnuts: These little gems add a nutty crunch that pairs beautifully with chocolate. If hazelnuts aren’t your thing, feel free to swap them for walnuts or pecans.
- 1 cup unsalted butter (for Nutella cream): Softened butter is key for a creamy frosting. If you’re looking for a lighter option, you can use whipped cream cheese instead.
- 3 cups powdered sugar (for Nutella cream): This sweetens and thickens the frosting. If you want to reduce sugar, you can use a sugar substitute, but it may change the texture.
- 1 cup Nutella (for Nutella cream): The star of our frosting! This creamy hazelnut spread is what makes this cake truly irresistible. If you need a Nutella alternative, try a chocolate hazelnut spread that’s dairy-free.
- ¼ cup heavy cream (for Nutella cream): This adds richness and helps achieve that perfect frosting consistency. You can use coconut cream for a dairy-free version.
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for Nutella cream): Just like in the cake, this adds a lovely flavor to the frosting.
Now that we have our ingredients lined up, you’re one step closer to creating this delightful Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting. Each ingredient plays a vital role in crafting a cake that’s not only delicious but also a joy to make. So, roll up your sleeves, and let’s get baking!
How to Make Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting
Step 1 – Prep Ingredients
Alright, let’s get this baking party started! First things first, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This is crucial because a hot oven is like a warm hug for your cake, helping it rise beautifully.
While that’s heating up, grab your two 9-inch round cake pans. Grease them up with a little butter or cooking spray, and then dust them with flour. This will ensure your cake slides out like a dream once it’s baked. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than a cake that sticks to the pan!
Now, let’s talk about measuring. I know it can be tempting to eyeball things, but for baking, precision is key. Use dry measuring cups for flour and sugar, and liquid measuring cups for milk and oil. Level off your dry ingredients with a straight edge for accuracy. It’s like giving your cake the best start possible!
Step 2 – Begin Cooking
With your oven preheated and pans ready, it’s time to mix! In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Give it a good whisk until everything is well blended. You want to see a beautiful, chocolatey mixture that smells divine!
Next, it’s time to add the wet ingredients. Crack in those two large eggs, pour in the whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Now, grab your electric mixer and beat everything together on medium speed for about 2 minutes. You’re looking for a smooth, velvety batter that’s just begging to be baked. And oh, the smell! It’s like a chocolate factory in your kitchen!
Step 3 – Combine Ingredients
Now comes the fun part! Carefully add the boiling water to your batter. Yes, boiling water! It might seem odd, but this step is a game-changer. It helps to bloom the cocoa powder, intensifying that rich chocolate flavor. Stir gently until everything is well combined. Your batter will be thinner than you might expect, but that’s perfectly normal!
Once that’s done, it’s time to fold in the finely chopped hazelnuts. Use a rubber spatula to gently incorporate them into the batter. This is where the magic happens—the nutty crunch will add a delightful texture to your cake. Just be careful not to overmix; we want to keep that light and airy consistency!
Step 4 – Finish and Serve
Now that your batter is ready, it’s time to bake! Divide the batter evenly between your prepared cake pans. Pop them in the oven and let them bake for about 30-35 minutes. You’ll know they’re done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The aroma wafting through your kitchen will be absolutely heavenly!
Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. This is crucial because it allows them to set a bit before transferring them to a wire rack. After that, let them cool completely. Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to frosting!
While the cakes are cooling, let’s whip up that luscious Nutella frosting. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened unsalted butter until it’s light and fluffy. Gradually add in the powdered sugar, mixing until well combined. Then, add the Nutella, heavy cream, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed until you achieve a smooth, airy frosting that’s just begging to be slathered on your cake.
Once your cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving platter and generously spread that Nutella cream on top. Add the second layer and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Feel free to get creative with your decorating! You can top it with whole hazelnuts or chocolate shavings for that extra wow factor.
And there you have it! Your Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting is ready to be devoured. Whether you’re serving it at a gathering or enjoying a slice with your afternoon coffee, this cake is sure to bring smiles all around. Enjoy every delicious bite!

Tips for Perfect Results
Now that you’re all set to bake your Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting, let me share some tried-and-true tips to ensure your cake turns out absolutely perfect every time. After all, we want to impress our family and friends, right?
First and foremost, invest in high-quality cocoa powder. Trust me, it makes a world of difference! The richer the cocoa, the more intense the chocolate flavor will be. Brands like Valrhona or Ghirardelli are fantastic choices. When you take that first bite, you’ll be able to taste the love and quality that went into your cake.
Next up, consider adding a teaspoon of espresso powder to your batter. I know, it sounds a bit unconventional, but espresso powder enhances the chocolate flavor without making your cake taste like coffee. It’s like a secret ingredient that elevates your cake to a whole new level. Just a little sprinkle can make your cake sing!
And let’s not forget about storage! If you happen to have any leftovers (which is a big if, because this cake is so delicious), make sure to store them properly. Place the cake in an airtight container or cover it tightly with plastic wrap. This will help maintain its freshness and keep that Nutella frosting from drying out. You can keep it in the refrigerator for up to three days, but I doubt it will last that long!
By following these simple tips, you’ll be well on your way to creating a Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting that’s not only delicious but also a showstopper. So, roll up your sleeves, and let’s make some magic happen in the kitchen!
Essential Equipment Needed
Before we dive into the deliciousness of our Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting, let’s make sure you have all the right tools at your fingertips. Having the right equipment can make your baking experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here’s a handy list of what you’ll need:
- Mixing bowls: A set of mixing bowls in various sizes is essential. I recommend having at least one large bowl for mixing your cake batter and a smaller one for your frosting. If you’re in a pinch, any large bowl will do—just make sure it’s sturdy enough to handle some vigorous mixing!
- Electric mixer: An electric mixer is a game-changer when it comes to whipping up cake batter and frosting. It saves time and effort, especially when you’re trying to achieve that light and fluffy texture. If you don’t have one, a good old-fashioned whisk will work, but be prepared for a bit of a workout!
- Measuring cups and spoons: Accurate measurements are crucial in baking. Invest in a set of dry measuring cups for your flour and sugar, and a liquid measuring cup for your milk and oil. Don’t forget the measuring spoons for those smaller quantities! If you’re feeling adventurous, you can even use a kitchen scale for precision.
- Rubber spatula: A rubber spatula is perfect for scraping down the sides of your mixing bowl and folding in ingredients. It’s like your trusty sidekick in the kitchen! If you don’t have one, a wooden spoon can work in a pinch, but it won’t be as effective for folding.
- Cake pans: You’ll need two 9-inch round cake pans for this recipe. If you don’t have round pans, you can use square ones instead—just adjust the baking time slightly. Make sure to grease and flour them well to prevent sticking!
- Wire rack: A wire rack is essential for cooling your cakes evenly. It allows air to circulate around the cake, preventing it from becoming soggy. If you don’t have a wire rack, you can use the back of a baking sheet or even a plate, but keep an eye on your cake to ensure it cools properly.
Now, if you find yourself lacking any of these tools, don’t fret! Here are some practical alternatives:
- If you don’t have an electric mixer, a whisk or a sturdy fork can do the job, though it may take a bit more elbow grease.
- No rubber spatula? A wooden spoon or even a large spoon can help you mix and fold ingredients, just be gentle to avoid overmixing.
- In a pinch for cake pans? You can use any oven-safe dish, just keep an eye on the baking time as it may vary.
- If you don’t have a wire rack, simply place your cakes on a plate or cutting board to cool, but remember to flip them over gently to avoid breaking.
With these tools and alternatives in mind, you’re all set to create your Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting. Happy baking, and remember, the most important ingredient is a sprinkle of love!
Delicious Variations of Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting
Now that you’ve mastered the classic Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting, let’s have some fun with variations! After all, baking is all about creativity and making it your own. Here are some delightful twists you can try that will keep your family guessing and coming back for more!
First up, let’s talk nuts! While hazelnuts are the star of the show in this recipe, you can easily switch things up by using different nuts. If you’re a fan of walnuts, they add a lovely earthy flavor that pairs beautifully with chocolate. Pecans are another fantastic option, bringing a buttery richness that’s simply divine. Just make sure to chop them finely, so they blend seamlessly into the cake. You could even mix and match! A combination of hazelnuts and walnuts can create a delightful texture and flavor profile that’s sure to impress.
Now, if you’re looking for a gluten-free option, I’ve got you covered! You can substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend. Just make sure it’s a 1:1 ratio, and you’ll be good to go. I’ve had great success with brands like Bob’s Red Mill or King Arthur Flour. They work wonders in cakes, ensuring you don’t miss out on that fluffy texture we all love. Just remember to check the labels for any additional ingredients that might not suit your dietary needs.
And let’s not forget about flavor! If you want to elevate your cake to new heights, consider adding a teaspoon of orange zest to the batter. The citrusy notes will brighten up the chocolate and add a refreshing twist that’s perfect for spring or summer gatherings. Alternatively, a splash of almond extract can bring a lovely nutty aroma that complements the hazelnuts beautifully. Just be careful not to overdo it; a little goes a long way!
Feeling adventurous? You could even experiment with different frostings! While Nutella is undeniably delicious, why not try a cream cheese frosting for a tangy contrast? Or, if you’re in the mood for something lighter, a whipped cream frosting can add a fluffy touch that balances the richness of the cake.
Lastly, if you’re looking to make this cake a bit more decadent, consider layering it with some fresh fruit. Sliced strawberries or raspberries between the layers can add a burst of freshness that cuts through the sweetness. Plus, it makes for a stunning presentation!
With these delicious variations, your Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting can become a versatile dessert that you can enjoy time and time again. So, roll up your sleeves, get creative, and let your taste buds guide you on this delightful baking journey!

If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, try a scoop of hazelnut or coffee ice cream for an extra layer of flavor that complements the cake perfectly.
If ice cream isn’t your thing, whipped cream is another fantastic option. A dollop of freshly whipped cream adds a light, airy touch that cuts through the richness of the Nutella frosting. You can even sweeten the whipped cream with a touch of vanilla or a sprinkle of powdered sugar for an extra treat. Just imagine that fluffy cloud of cream sitting atop your cake—pure bliss!

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more festive, why not serve your cake with a glass of dessert wine? A sweet red wine, like a Port or a late-harvest Zinfandel, can bring out the chocolate notes in the cake and create a luxurious experience. Just imagine savoring a slice of cake while sipping on a glass of velvety wine—now that’s a treat worth celebrating!
For a lighter touch, consider serving your Chocolate Hazelnut Cake with Nutella Frosting with some fresh fruit. Slices of strawberries, raspberries, or even a medley of seasonal fruits can add a refreshing contrast to the rich cake. You could even create a simple fruit salad drizzled with a bit of honey or a squeeze of lemon juice for an extra zing!
Lastly, if you’re looking for a more balanced meal, consider pairing your cake with a light salad. A simple green salad with mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette can provide a refreshing counterpoint to the sweetness of the cake. It’s a great way to round out your meal and ensure everyone leaves the table feeling satisfied.
