Ingredients
  

  • 2 1/2 pounds Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 garlic cloves minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar or Gruyère cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg optional

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a baking dish.
  • Slice potatoes thinly.
  • Make the creamy sauce by melting butter, adding garlic and flour, then whisking in milk, cream, and cheese.
  • Layer potatoes and sauce in the baking dish.
  • Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes.
  • Let cool and serve.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline for even potato slices.
  • Add more cheese for extra richness.
