Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup rice vinegar
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 2 tablespoons water (for cornstarch slurry)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sugar, water, rice vinegar, soy sauce, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally until the sugar dissolves completely.
- In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Once the sauce is boiling, slowly whisk in the cornstarch slurry.
- Continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens to your desired consistency.
- Remove from heat and stir in the sesame oil if using. Allow the sauce to cool before transferring it to a jar or container.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add more red pepper flakes or a dash of sriracha to the sauce.
- This sauce can be used as a dipping sauce for spring rolls, grilled chicken, or as a glaze for roasted vegetables.
- Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
