Description

A delicious and flaky puff pastry braid filled with savory mushrooms and Gruyère cheese, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, shredded
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Flour, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Add the chopped mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they release their moisture and become golden brown, about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Stir in the thyme, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out each sheet of puff pastry into a rectangle, about 12×10 inches.
  8. Place one sheet on the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Spoon the mushroom mixture down the center of the pastry, leaving about 2 inches on each side.
  10. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère cheese over the mushroom filling.
  11. Using a sharp knife, make diagonal cuts along the sides of the pastry, about 1 inch apart.
  12. Fold the strips over the filling, alternating sides to create a braid effect.
  13. Brush the top of the braid with the beaten egg to give it a golden color when baked.
  14. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
  15. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try adding a splash of white wine to the mushroom mixture while cooking.
  • You can also substitute the Gruyère cheese with cheddar or mozzarella for a different taste.
