A delightful recipe for Orange Cardamom Morning Buns that are perfect for breakfast or brunch.

- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
- ½ cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- Zest of 1 orange
- ¼ cup fresh orange juice
- ½ cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
- 1–2 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, ground cardamom, and salt. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the melted butter, egg, orange zest, and orange juice to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
- Spread a thin layer of softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cardamom (optional). Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it into 12 equal pieces.
- Arrange the slices in a greased baking dish, cover with a towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- While the buns are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar with enough orange juice to achieve a drizzling consistency.
- Once the buns are out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, then drizzle the glaze over the top before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg along with the cardamom.
- You can substitute the orange juice with lemon juice for a different citrus twist.
