Description

A delightful recipe for Orange Cardamom Morning Buns that are perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • ½ cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • ¼ cup fresh orange juice
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 12 tablespoons fresh orange juice (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, ground cardamom, and salt. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the melted butter, egg, orange zest, and orange juice to the yeast mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 375°F. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  6. Spread a thin layer of softened butter over the dough and sprinkle with a mixture of sugar and cardamom (optional). Roll the dough tightly into a log and slice it into 12 equal pieces.
  7. Arrange the slices in a greased baking dish, cover with a towel, and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. While the buns are baking, prepare the glaze by mixing the powdered sugar with enough orange juice to achieve a drizzling consistency.
  10. Once the buns are out of the oven, let them cool for a few minutes, then drizzle the glaze over the top before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg along with the cardamom.
  • You can substitute the orange juice with lemon juice for a different citrus twist.
