Description
Learn how to make Simit, a delicious Turkish sesame bread, easily at home with this step-by-step guide.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup bread flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/4 cup sesame seeds
- 1/4 cup molasses (or honey)
- 1/4 cup water (for dipping)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, bread flour, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12 inches long, and shape it into a ring, pinching the ends together.
- In a shallow bowl, mix molasses and 1/4 cup of water. Dip each ring into the mixture, then roll in sesame seeds to coat.
- Place the coated rings on the prepared baking sheet and let them rest for about 15 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter version, add a tablespoon of honey to the dough.
- Try adding spices like cumin or coriander to the dough for an extra flavor twist.
