Description

Learn how to make Simit, a delicious Turkish sesame bread, easily at home with this step-by-step guide.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup bread flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1/4 cup molasses (or honey)
  • 1/4 cup water (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, bread flour, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12 inches long, and shape it into a ring, pinching the ends together.
  7. In a shallow bowl, mix molasses and 1/4 cup of water. Dip each ring into the mixture, then roll in sesame seeds to coat.
  8. Place the coated rings on the prepared baking sheet and let them rest for about 15 minutes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add a tablespoon of honey to the dough.
  • Try adding spices like cumin or coriander to the dough for an extra flavor twist.
