Description

A delightful recipe for festive frosted holiday sugar cookies, perfect for celebrating the season!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass or your hand.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the frosting, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a bowl until smooth. If desired, divide the frosting into separate bowls and add food coloring to each for different colors.
  10. Once the cookies are completely cool, spread the frosting on top and decorate with sprinkles if desired.

Notes

  • For a festive twist, try adding citrus zest (like lemon or orange) to the dough for extra flavor.
  • You can also substitute half of the all-purpose flour with almond flour for a nutty taste and texture.
