Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg and milk until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
  6. Fold in the chopped dates and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
  7. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter, then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
  10. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing into squares and serving.
