- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 cup pitted dates, chopped
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)
- Extra cinnamon sugar (1 tablespoon sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon) for sprinkling
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and milk until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined.
- Fold in the chopped dates and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
- Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Remove from the oven and brush the top with melted butter, then sprinkle with the cinnamon sugar mixture.
- Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before slicing into squares and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, try adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract to the batter.
- You can substitute the walnuts with pecans or omit them entirely for a nut-free version.
