Chocolate Maritozzi are delightful Italian cream buns filled with whipped cream and chocolate chips, perfect for any occasion.

- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the cream)
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warmed milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
- Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
- While the buns are cooling, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- Once the buns are cool, slice them open and fill each with whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate chips.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the dough.
- You can substitute the chocolate chips with fresh berries for a fruity twist.
