Description

Chocolate Maritozzi are delightful Italian cream buns filled with whipped cream and chocolate chips, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the cream)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, yeast, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the warmed milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  7. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  8. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  9. Cover and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  10. Bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely on a wire rack.
  12. While the buns are cooling, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  13. Once the buns are cool, slice them open and fill each with whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate chips.
  14. Serve immediately or refrigerate for up to 2 hours before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of cocoa powder to the dough.
  • You can substitute the chocolate chips with fresh berries for a fruity twist.
