Description

Delicious blackberry dumplings served with a sweet blackberry sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups fresh blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup milk
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the blackberries, ½ cup of sugar, lemon juice, water, and vanilla extract. Cook over medium heat until the blackberries start to break down and the mixture begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and remaining ½ cup of sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the milk and melted butter. Pour the milk mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  4. Bring the blackberry mixture back to a gentle simmer.
  5. Using a spoon, drop heaping tablespoons of the dumpling batter into the simmering blackberry mixture.
  6. Cover the pot with a lid and let the dumplings steam for about 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  7. After 15 minutes, check the dumplings for doneness; they should be fluffy and cooked through.
  8. Serve warm, spooning the blackberry sauce over the dumplings.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the dumpling batter.
  • You can substitute the blackberries with blueberries or raspberries for a different fruit variation.
  • For an extra touch, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top.
