Description
Learn how to make traditional Basque Bread with this easy recipe that guarantees perfect baking every time.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
- In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cover the loaf with the towel again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Before baking, make a few shallow slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- For a crustier bread, place a shallow pan of water in the oven while baking to create steam.
- Add herbs or spices like rosemary or garlic powder to the dough for extra flavor.
