Description

Learn how to make traditional Basque Bread with this easy recipe that guarantees perfect baking every time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Mix well to evenly distribute the ingredients.
  2. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  3. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and shape it into a round loaf. Place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Cover the loaf with the towel again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  8. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  9. Before baking, make a few shallow slashes on the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  11. Allow the bread to cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crustier bread, place a shallow pan of water in the oven while baking to create steam.
  • Add herbs or spices like rosemary or garlic powder to the dough for extra flavor.
