A flavorful delight featuring Zimbabwean spiced boerewors served in a hot dog bun with sautéed vegetables and a zesty sauce.

- 1 pound boerewors (or substitute with Italian sausage)
- 4 large hot dog buns
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 bell pepper (any color), diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded lettuce
- 1 medium tomato, diced
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro (optional)
Instructions
- Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using boerewors, coil it into a spiral and secure with toothpicks. If using Italian sausage, leave them whole.
- Cook the boerewors or sausages for about 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally until fully cooked and browned. Remove from heat and let rest.
- In a separate skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, paprika, cumin, coriander, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
- In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise with lemon juice and cilantro (if using) to create a zesty sauce.
- Slice the hot dog buns open and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.
- To assemble, place a piece of boerewors or sausage in each bun, top with the sautéed onion and pepper mixture, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and drizzle with the zesty sauce.
- Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the toppings.
- You can also substitute the lettuce and tomato with coleslaw for a crunchy texture.
