Description

A flavorful delight featuring Zimbabwean spiced boerewors served in a hot dog bun with sautéed vegetables and a zesty sauce.


Ingredients

  • 1 pound boerewors (or substitute with Italian sausage)
  • 4 large hot dog buns
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bell pepper (any color), diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 medium tomato, diced
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh cilantro (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat. If using boerewors, coil it into a spiral and secure with toothpicks. If using Italian sausage, leave them whole.
  2. Cook the boerewors or sausages for about 10-15 minutes, turning occasionally until fully cooked and browned. Remove from heat and let rest.
  3. In a separate skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and bell pepper, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic, paprika, cumin, coriander, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the mayonnaise with lemon juice and cilantro (if using) to create a zesty sauce.
  6. Slice the hot dog buns open and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster.
  7. To assemble, place a piece of boerewors or sausage in each bun, top with the sautéed onion and pepper mixture, shredded lettuce, diced tomato, and drizzle with the zesty sauce.
  8. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce to the toppings.
  • You can also substitute the lettuce and tomato with coleslaw for a crunchy texture.
