  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 5 cups powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • ½ cup whole milk (for frosting)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Add the softened butter, milk, eggs, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth and well combined.
  4. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from the pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. While the cakes are cooling, prepare the chocolate frosting. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  8. Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, alternating with the milk, and beat until smooth and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  9. Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a generous amount of frosting on top. Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  10. Slice and serve!

Notes

  • For a fun twist, add a layer of fresh fruit or jam between the cake layers.
  • To make a lemon version, replace the vanilla extract with lemon extract and add the zest of one lemon to the batter.
