Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Heat over medium flame, whisking continuously until the mixture thickens and starts to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks vigorously. Slowly incorporate a small portion of the hot milk mixture into the yolks, whisking constantly to avoid curdling.
  3. Once tempered, return the yolk mixture to the saucepan with the remaining milk mixture. Keep stirring over medium heat until the custard reaches a thicker consistency, approximately 2-3 minutes.
  4. Remove from heat and blend in the vanilla extract and butter until the mixture is silky smooth.
  5. In another bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, melted butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract, mixing until well incorporated.
  6. Firmly press this mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×9-inch baking dish to create a solid crust.
  7. Carefully pour the custard over the crust, spreading it evenly.
  8. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours or until fully set.
  9. Once chilled and firm, slice into squares and serve cold. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top if desired.
