Description

A comforting and delicious Sweet Potato & Spicy Sausage Gratin that combines layers of sweet potatoes with spicy Italian sausage and creamy cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced (about 4 cups)
  • 1 pound spicy Italian sausage, casings removed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional for extra heat)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  4. Add the spicy sausage to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the heavy cream, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Stir in the cooked sausage mixture.
  6. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer half of the sweet potato slices evenly across the bottom.
  7. Pour half of the sausage and cream mixture over the sweet potatoes. Repeat with the remaining sweet potatoes and sausage mixture.
  8. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove the foil, sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Let the gratin cool for 5-10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley.

Notes

  • For a creamier texture, consider adding an extra ½ cup of heavy cream.
  • You can substitute the spicy sausage with a mild variety or turkey sausage for a lighter option.
  • For added flavor, try incorporating fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary into the layers.
