Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Incorporate the softened butter or shortening into the dry ingredients until crumbly.
  3. Slowly pour in the warm water, mixing until the dough comes together.
  4. If the dough is sticky, sprinkle in more flour until manageable.
  5. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead gently for about a minute.
  6. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
  7. Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares or triangles.
  8. Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet to 350°F.
  9. Fry the dough pieces in small batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until puffed and golden brown.
  10. Use a slotted spoon to lift the sopapillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  11. Serve warm, drizzled with honey or sprinkled with powdered sugar.
