Instructions
- Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Incorporate the softened butter or shortening into the dry ingredients until crumbly.
- Slowly pour in the warm water, mixing until the dough comes together.
- If the dough is sticky, sprinkle in more flour until manageable.
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead gently for about a minute.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thick and cut into squares or triangles.
- Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet to 350°F.
- Fry the dough pieces in small batches for 2-3 minutes on each side until puffed and golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to lift the sopapillas from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- Serve warm, drizzled with honey or sprinkled with powdered sugar.
Notes
- For extra flavor, mix a dash of cinnamon into the dough.
