Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  5. Carefully stir in the hot water until the batter is smooth and thin.
  6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans.
  7. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  8. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Serve as is or frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.
