Description
Sadza neNyama is a traditional Zimbabwean dish consisting of maize meal served with a flavorful beef stew.
Ingredients

- 2 cups maize meal (cornmeal)
- 4 cups water
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 pound beef stew meat, cut into bite-sized pieces
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup beef broth or water
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil. Add 1 teaspoon of salt.
- Gradually stir in the maize meal, mixing continuously to prevent lumps.
- Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring frequently until the mixture thickens and pulls away from the sides of the pot.
- Remove from heat and cover to keep warm.
- In a separate large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the beef stew meat and brown on all sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the beef and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until the onion is translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the bell pepper and cook for another 2 minutes.
- Stir in the chopped tomatoes, paprika, cumin, salt, and black pepper.
- Return the browned beef to the skillet and pour in the beef broth or water.
- Bring to a simmer, cover, and cook for 30-40 minutes, or until the beef is tender.
- If desired, stir in chopped fresh parsley before serving.
- To serve, scoop a portion of sadza onto a plate and top with the beef stew.
Notes
- For a spicier stew, add chopped jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- You can substitute the beef with chicken or a plant-based protein for a different flavor profile.
