Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Whipped cream, for topping
  • Chocolate shavings or marshmallows, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until warm, but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
  2. Once the milk mixture is warm, add the semi-sweet chocolate chips, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
  3. Continue to heat the hot chocolate until it reaches your desired temperature, but do not let it boil.
  4. Remove from heat and pour into mugs. Top with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings or marshmallows, if desired.
  5. Serve immediately and enjoy the cozy warmth of your homemade hot chocolate.

Notes

  • For a peppermint twist, add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the hot chocolate mixture.
  • To make it a mocha hot chocolate, stir in 1/2 cup of brewed espresso or strong coffee after removing from heat.
