Ingredients
Scale

- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Whipped cream, for topping

Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk and heavy cream. Heat over medium heat until warm, but not boiling. Stir occasionally to prevent scorching.
- Once the milk mixture is warm, add the semi-sweet chocolate chips, unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Whisk continuously until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth and creamy.
- Continue to heat the hot chocolate until it reaches your desired temperature, but do not let it boil.
- Remove from heat and pour into mugs. Top with whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings or marshmallows, if desired.
- Serve immediately and enjoy the cozy warmth of your homemade hot chocolate.
Notes
- For a peppermint twist, add 1/4 teaspoon of peppermint extract to the hot chocolate mixture.
- To make it a mocha hot chocolate, stir in 1/2 cup of brewed espresso or strong coffee after removing from heat.
