Description
Pouding Chômeur, also known as Poor Man’s Pudding, is a delicious dessert that combines a cake-like base with a rich sauce, perfect for serving warm.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 cups hot water
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the milk and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly.
- In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and hot water until the sugar is dissolved. Carefully pour this mixture over the batter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake part comes out clean.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. This pudding is best served warm, often with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- For a chocolate twist, add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients and adjust the sugar to taste.
- Consider adding a teaspoon of cinnamon or nutmeg to the batter for a warm spice flavor.
