- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to 110°F
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- 1/4 cup coarse sugar for topping
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and yeast. Mix well to combine.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and spread it into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
- In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, softened butter, and cinnamon until well combined. Spread this mixture evenly over the dough.
- If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top.
- Cover the pan with a towel and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
- Before baking, sprinkle the coarse sugar over the top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
- Try adding a teaspoon of almond extract for a different flavor profile.
