Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to 110°F
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup coarse sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, salt, and yeast. Mix well to combine.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  7. After the dough has risen, punch it down and spread it into a greased 9×13-inch baking pan.
  8. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, softened butter, and cinnamon until well combined. Spread this mixture evenly over the dough.
  9. If using, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the top.
  10. Cover the pan with a towel and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  11. Before baking, sprinkle the coarse sugar over the top.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  13. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour.
