- 2 cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for topping)
- 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (for topping)
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, honey, and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of honey.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a rope about 10 inches long and form a circle, pinching the ends together.
- Boil the bagels in batches for about 1 minute on each side.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Sprinkle sesame seeds and poppy seeds on top.
- Bake the bagels for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter bagel, add 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough.
- For a savory twist, mix in 1/2 cup of shredded cheese or chopped herbs into the dough before kneading.
