  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, honey, and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add 1 tablespoon of honey.
  7. Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces.
  8. Roll each piece into a rope about 10 inches long and form a circle, pinching the ends together.
  9. Boil the bagels in batches for about 1 minute on each side.
  10. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  11. Sprinkle sesame seeds and poppy seeds on top.
  12. Bake the bagels for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  13. Let them cool on a wire rack before serving.
