Description

Kataifi Portokalopita is a delightful orange dessert made with kataifi pastry, soaked in a sweet orange syrup.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces kataifi pastry (shredded phyllo dough)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup crushed walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a spacious bowl, delicately pull apart the kataifi pastry strands with your fingers to aerate them.
  3. Transfer the loosened pastry into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. Pour the melted butter over the kataifi, ensuring each strand is well-coated, and gently toss with your hands to combine.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden and crisp.
  6. While the kataifi bakes, prepare the syrup by combining the sugar, water, orange juice, grated orange peel, vanilla essence, and ground cinnamon in a saucepan.
  7. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  8. Once done, remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  9. After the kataifi has reached the perfect golden hue, take it out of the oven and immediately pour the warm syrup over the hot pastry, ensuring it is thoroughly soaked.
  10. Allow the dish to rest for at least 30 minutes, giving the kataifi time to absorb the syrup.
  11. For an added touch, sprinkle with crushed walnuts and dust with confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the kataifi pastry is well-aerated for a light texture.
  • Let the syrup cool slightly before pouring it over the hot kataifi.
  • Crushed walnuts are optional but add a nice crunch.
