Description
Kataifi Portokalopita is a delightful orange dessert made with kataifi pastry, soaked in a sweet orange syrup.

- 8 ounces kataifi pastry (shredded phyllo dough)
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice
- 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
- 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup crushed walnuts (optional)
- 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a spacious bowl, delicately pull apart the kataifi pastry strands with your fingers to aerate them.
- Transfer the loosened pastry into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Pour the melted butter over the kataifi, ensuring each strand is well-coated, and gently toss with your hands to combine.
- Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 30-35 minutes, or until the top is beautifully golden and crisp.
- While the kataifi bakes, prepare the syrup by combining the sugar, water, orange juice, grated orange peel, vanilla essence, and ground cinnamon in a saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
- Once done, remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- After the kataifi has reached the perfect golden hue, take it out of the oven and immediately pour the warm syrup over the hot pastry, ensuring it is thoroughly soaked.
- Allow the dish to rest for at least 30 minutes, giving the kataifi time to absorb the syrup.
- For an added touch, sprinkle with crushed walnuts and dust with confectioners’ sugar just before serving.

- Let the syrup cool slightly before pouring it over the hot kataifi.
