Description

Discover the sweet delight of Hungarian Fried Dough, also known as Churros de Hungary, a delicious treat perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk (around 110°F)
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  2. In a smaller bowl, activate the yeast by combining it with the warm milk and letting it sit for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour blend, followed by the egg and melted butter. Mix until a cohesive dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for approximately 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
  6. After rising, gently deflate the dough and roll it out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch. Cut into preferred shapes.
  7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F.
  8. Carefully drop the dough pieces into the hot oil, frying until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  9. Remove with a slotted spoon and let drain on paper towels. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast.
  • Experiment with different shapes for the dough pieces.
  • Serve warm for the best taste experience.
