  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts or almonds
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water (for syrup)
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt together. Gradually add the water, stirring until a smooth batter forms. Add the baking powder and mix well. Let the batter rest for 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. To create the kataifi strands, take a large, flat surface and pour a thin layer of the batter. Using a spatula, spread it evenly into a very thin layer. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
  4. Once cooled, use your hands to shred the baked layer into thin strands. Repeat the process until all the batter is used.
  5. In a bowl, combine the shredded coconut, chopped nuts, cinnamon, and sugar. Mix well.
  6. Take a small handful of the kataifi strands and form a nest shape. Place a spoonful of the nut mixture in the center and fold the strands over to enclose the filling. Repeat until all the mixture is used.
  7. Place the filled kataifi on the lined baking sheet. Brush the tops with melted butter and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  8. While the kataifi is baking, prepare the syrup. In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of water, honey, and vanilla extract. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
  9. Once the kataifi is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately drizzle the syrup over the hot kataifi. Allow it to soak for at least 10 minutes before serving.

  • For a different flavor, try adding orange or lemon zest to the nut mixture.
  • You can substitute the nuts with dried fruits like raisins or chopped dates for a sweeter version.
