Description

Learn how to make cheesy arepas that will wow your taste buds with this easy recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups arepa flour (masarepa)
  • 2 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella or queso blanco)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for cooking)

Instructions

  1. Begin by mixing the arepa flour and salt in a spacious bowl.
  2. Slowly pour in the warm water while kneading the mixture with your hands until it transforms into a pliable dough.
  3. Allow the dough to rest for about 5 minutes to ensure it becomes fully hydrated.
  4. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces, rolling each piece into a ball.
  5. Gently press each ball into a flat disc, aiming for a thickness of about ½ inch.
  6. Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  7. Once the oil is shimmering, carefully place the arepas in the skillet.
  8. Sauté them for approximately 5-7 minutes on each side until they develop a golden-brown crust.
  9. Transfer the arepas to a cooling rack for a brief moment.
  10. With a sharp knife, slice each arepa open to create a pocket for the filling.
  11. Generously fill each pocket with shredded cheese, then return them to the skillet for an additional 2-3 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt beautifully.
  12. Serve the cheesy arepas warm and enjoy the delightful flavors.

Notes

  • For an extra flavor boost, mix in chopped jalapeños or diced bell peppers into the dough before cooking.
  • Get creative with fillings like pulled pork, creamy avocado, or seasoned black beans to explore a range of delicious tastes.
