Description

Greek Kataifi is a delightful dessert made with shredded phyllo dough, nuts, and a sweet syrup, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound kataifi pastry (shredded phyllo dough)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the finely chopped walnuts, pistachios, and ground cinnamon, then set this mixture aside.
  3. Gently unravel the kataifi pastry and place half of it into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish, ensuring it is spread out evenly.
  4. Pour half of the melted butter over the kataifi layer in the baking dish.
  5. Evenly distribute the nut mixture over the buttered kataifi.
  6. Layer the remaining kataifi pastry on top, spreading it out, and drizzle the rest of the melted butter over this final layer.
  7. Bake for 40-45 minutes in the preheated oven until the top is golden and crispy.
  8. While the kataifi is baking, prepare the syrup by combining sugar, water, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  9. Once the kataifi is baked to perfection, take it out of the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the entire dessert. Let it absorb the syrup for at least 30 minutes before serving.
  10. Just before serving, lightly dust the top with powdered sugar for an elegant finish.
