Description

A delightful recipe for frosted cutout sugar cookies that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 23 tablespoons milk
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  6. Divide the dough into two discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until firm.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼ inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool on the baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  9. In a medium bowl, mix powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons of milk until smooth. If desired, add food coloring to create different colors. Adjust the consistency with more milk if needed.
  10. Once cookies are completely cool, frost with the icing and decorate with sprinkles if desired.

Notes

  • For a fun twist, try adding citrus zest (like lemon or orange) to the dough for added flavor.
  • You can substitute half of the all-purpose flour with almond flour for a nutty flavor and slightly different texture.
