Description

A delightful cake combining the rich flavors of dark chocolate and the zesty brightness of blood orange.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • Zest of 1 blood orange
  • ½ cup fresh blood orange juice
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9×13 inch baking pan by greasing and dusting it with flour.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder, whisking them together until well blended.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and airy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Incorporate the eggs one at a time, ensuring each is fully mixed in before adding the next. Then, mix in the vanilla extract, blood orange zest, and juice until well combined.
  5. Carefully mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk, starting and finishing with the dry ingredients. Stir just until the batter is combined.
  6. Gently fold in the dark chocolate chips, making sure they are evenly distributed throughout the batter.
  7. Transfer the batter into the prepared baking pan, smoothing the top with a spatula for an even surface.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cake cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before moving it to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. For an added touch, drizzle a glaze made from powdered sugar and blood orange juice over the cooled cake.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, replace the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free baking blend.
  • Pair with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a decadent finish.
