Description
Endives au gratin is a creamy and cheesy dish that combines tender endives with a rich cheese sauce, topped with crispy breadcrumbs.

- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 medium endives, trimmed and halved lengthwise
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese
- 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the endives, cut side down, and cook for about 5 minutes until they are lightly browned.
- Flip the endives and cook for another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the heavy cream, Gruyère cheese, Parmesan cheese, Dijon mustard, salt, pepper, and nutmeg if using. Stir until well combined.
- In a baking dish, arrange the cooked endives cut side up.
- Pour the cheese sauce evenly over the endives.
- Sprinkle the breadcrumbs on top.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a lighter version, substitute half of the heavy cream with low-fat milk.
- You can also add cooked ham or bacon bits to the cheese sauce for added flavor and protein.
