Description

Egyptian Beef Goulash (Phyllo Beef Pie) is a delicious savory dish made with ground beef and phyllo pastry.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes (fresh or canned)
  • 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 package (16 ounces) phyllo pastry, thawed
  • 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
  • 1 egg, beaten for egg wash

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the diced onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  4. Incorporate the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  5. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  6. Mix in the cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
  7. Pour in the chopped tomatoes and beef stock, allowing the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
  8. Remove from heat and fold in the chopped parsley.
  9. On a clean surface, lay down a sheet of phyllo dough and brush it lightly with melted butter. Stack 5 more sheets on top, brushing each layer with butter.
  10. Spoon half of the beef filling along one edge of the phyllo and roll it up tightly to create a log shape. Place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  11. Repeat with the remaining phyllo and beef filling.
  12. Brush the tops of the logs with the beaten egg.
  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
  14. Let cool for a few minutes before slicing into pieces.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add diced bell peppers or olives to the beef mixture.
  • These rolls pair well with yogurt or a light salad.
