Description
Egyptian Beef Goulash (Phyllo Beef Pie) is a delicious savory dish made with ground beef and phyllo pastry.

- 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes (fresh or canned)
- 1/2 cup beef stock
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 1 package (16 ounces) phyllo pastry, thawed
- 1/2 cup melted unsalted butter
- 1 egg, beaten for egg wash
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F.
- In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the diced onion and sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Incorporate the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. Drain excess fat if necessary.
- Mix in the cumin, coriander, smoked paprika, cinnamon, salt, and pepper.
- Pour in the chopped tomatoes and beef stock, allowing the mixture to simmer for about 10 minutes until it thickens slightly.
- Remove from heat and fold in the chopped parsley.
- On a clean surface, lay down a sheet of phyllo dough and brush it lightly with melted butter. Stack 5 more sheets on top, brushing each layer with butter.
- Spoon half of the beef filling along one edge of the phyllo and roll it up tightly to create a log shape. Place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Repeat with the remaining phyllo and beef filling.
- Brush the tops of the logs with the beaten egg.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until crispy and golden brown.
- Let cool for a few minutes before slicing into pieces.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add diced bell peppers or olives to the beef mixture.
- These rolls pair well with yogurt or a light salad.
