- 8 cups cubed day-old bread (white or whole wheat)
- 1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
- 1 tablespoon fresh sage, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried)
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the sausage and set aside, leaving the drippings in the skillet.
- Add the butter to the skillet. Once melted, add the diced onion and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until softened. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread, cooked sausage, sautéed vegetables, sage, thyme, parsley, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Pour the chicken broth over the mixture and stir until everything is well combined and the bread is moistened.
- Transfer the stuffing to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Let the stuffing cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the sausage with sautéed mushrooms and add more vegetables like bell peppers or carrots.
- Add dried cranberries or chopped apples for a touch of sweetness and extra flavor.
