Description

Discover the delicious recipe for Custard Baklava Rolls, a delightful twist on traditional baklava with a creamy custard filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups phyllo pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup walnuts, finely chopped
  • 1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for custard)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for custard)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, pistachios, ground cinnamon, and 1 cup of sugar, stirring well to blend the flavors.
  3. On a clean work surface, lay a sheet of phyllo dough and brush it generously with melted butter. Layer another sheet on top and repeat the buttering process for a total of 6 sheets.
  4. Distribute approximately 1/4 cup of the nut mixture along one edge of the stacked phyllo sheets.
  5. Carefully roll the dough tightly to form a log shape and position the roll seam-side down on a greased baking tray.
  6. Continue this process with the remaining phyllo and nut mixture until all are rolled.
  7. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until they turn a beautiful golden brown.
  8. While the rolls are baking, prepare the syrup by combining 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes before removing it from the heat to cool.
  9. Next, make the custard by whisking together the whole milk, eggs, cornstarch, 1/4 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens to a creamy consistency, then remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
  10. Once the baklava rolls are finished baking, take them out of the oven and immediately pour the cooled syrup over them, ensuring they soak for at least 30 minutes to absorb the sweetness.
  11. To serve, cut the baklava swirls into bite-sized pieces and generously drizzle the warm custard over the top. Enjoy them either warm or at room temperature for a delightful treat!

Notes

  • Ensure the phyllo pastry is fully thawed before use for best results.
  • Allow the baklava to soak in the syrup for at least 30 minutes for optimal flavor.
  • These rolls can be served warm or at room temperature.
