- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed to 110°F

- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for glaze)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and granulated sugar. In a separate small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract to the yeast mixture, then pour it into the flour mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place it in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing the diced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and walnuts (if using) in a bowl. Set aside.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Spread the apple filling evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges. Roll the dough tightly from one long side to the other, then shape it into a ring and pinch the ends together.
- Place the kringle on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Use scissors to make cuts along the outer edge of the ring, about every 2 inches, and gently pull each cut piece outward to create a twisted effect.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to make the glaze. Drizzle it over the warm kringle before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, try adding a pinch of nutmeg to the apple filling.
- You can also substitute the apples with pears or berries for a different fruit variation.
- For a festive touch, sprinkle some cinnamon sugar on top before baking.
