Ingredients

- 4–5 medium russet or Yukon Gold potatoes, thinly sliced
- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, thinly sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a saucepan, melt butter and sauté onion until soft. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
- Stir in flour and cook for 2 minutes, then gradually whisk in milk. Cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in cheese, salt, and pepper.
- Layer half of the potatoes in the baking dish and pour half of the sauce over them. Repeat layers.
- Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices.
- For extra richness, use half-and-half or a mix of milk and cream.
