  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup pitted dates, chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  3. In another bowl, cream the softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Fold in the chopped dates and walnuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and roll it into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Brush the surface of the dough with the beaten egg.
  8. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.
  9. Cut the log into 1-inch thick slices and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter roll, drizzle with a simple icing made from powdered sugar and milk after baking.
  • Substitute the walnuts with pecans or omit them entirely for a nut-free version.
