- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- Zest of 1 large orange
- ½ cup fresh orange juice
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5-inch loaf pan.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. Set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract, orange zest, and orange juice until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Fold in the chocolate chips gently.
- Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of orange liqueur to the batter.
- You can also top the cooled loaf with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar and orange juice for an extra sweet touch.
