Description
A delicious and hearty chestnut stuffing recipe perfect for the holiday season.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3 cups cubed bread (preferably day-old, white or whole wheat)
- 1 cup cooked and chopped chestnuts (canned or roasted)
- 1 cup diced celery
- 1 cup diced onion
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1 teaspoon dried sage
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 large eggs, beaten
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread, cooked chestnuts, sautéed onion and celery, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken or vegetable broth and beaten eggs. Pour this mixture over the bread mixture and stir until everything is well combined and moistened.
- Transfer the stuffing mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider incorporating diced apples or cranberries into the stuffing for a touch of sweetness.
- If you prefer a gluten-free option, substitute the bread with gluten-free bread or cornbread. Adjust the broth as needed to ensure the stuffing remains moist.
