Description

A delicious and hearty chestnut stuffing recipe perfect for the holiday season.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups cubed bread (preferably day-old, white or whole wheat)
  • 1 cup cooked and chopped chestnuts (canned or roasted)
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 large eggs, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and celery, and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cubed bread, cooked chestnuts, sautéed onion and celery, parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the chicken or vegetable broth and beaten eggs. Pour this mixture over the bread mixture and stir until everything is well combined and moistened.
  5. Transfer the stuffing mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider incorporating diced apples or cranberries into the stuffing for a touch of sweetness.
  • If you prefer a gluten-free option, substitute the bread with gluten-free bread or cornbread. Adjust the broth as needed to ensure the stuffing remains moist.
