- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 cup finely chopped basil
- 1/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1 teaspoon onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 4 ounces aged cheddar cheese, diced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, basil, buttermilk, egg, garlic salt, onion flakes, kosher salt, and black pepper. Stir gently until just blended.
- Scoop out approximately 2 tablespoons of the mixture and press it flat in your hand.
- Place a piece of aged cheddar in the center, then fold the meat around the cheese, shaping it into a ball.
- Repeat until all the meat mixture and cheese are used.
- In a large oven-safe skillet, heat the canola oil over medium heat.
- Add the meatballs and sear for about 5 minutes, turning to achieve an even golden brown.
- Pour the tomato sauce over the meatballs and transfer the skillet to the oven.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the meatballs are fully cooked and the cheese is bubbling.
- Allow the meatballs to rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For an extra flavor boost, mix in 1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika into the meat mixture.
- Feel free to swap ground beef with ground lamb or pork for a unique twist while maintaining the cheesy center.
