Description
A delightful recipe for making candied orange peel in syrup, perfect for adding a zesty touch to various dishes.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 large oranges
- 2 cups water
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Thoroughly rinse the oranges to eliminate any wax or residues.
- Carefully peel the oranges using a sharp knife, minimizing the white pith, and cut the peels into thin strips, approximately 1/4 inch wide.
- In a saucepan, place the orange peels and cover them with water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Drain the peels and set aside.
- In the same saucepan, mix together 2 cups of water, 2 cups of sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
- Introduce the drained orange peels into the syrup and allow it to reach a gentle simmer. Cook for around 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peels turn translucent and the syrup thickens slightly.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and let the peels steep in the syrup for 30 minutes as they cool.
- Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied peels onto a wire rack to cool completely. Store the cooled peels in the syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.
Notes
- For an added kick, consider incorporating a dash of ground cinnamon or a few whole cloves into the syrup during the cooking process.
- The syrup can also serve as a delightful sweetener for cocktails, desserts, or pancakes, enhancing them with a burst of orange flavor.
