Ingredients

  • 2 large oranges
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Thoroughly rinse the oranges to eliminate any wax or residues.
  2. Carefully peel the oranges using a sharp knife, minimizing the white pith, and cut the peels into thin strips, approximately 1/4 inch wide.
  3. In a saucepan, place the orange peels and cover them with water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Drain the peels and set aside.
  4. In the same saucepan, mix together 2 cups of water, 2 cups of sugar, vanilla extract, and salt. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  5. Introduce the drained orange peels into the syrup and allow it to reach a gentle simmer. Cook for around 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peels turn translucent and the syrup thickens slightly.
  6. Remove the saucepan from heat and let the peels steep in the syrup for 30 minutes as they cool.
  7. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the candied peels onto a wire rack to cool completely. Store the cooled peels in the syrup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for later use.

  • For an added kick, consider incorporating a dash of ground cinnamon or a few whole cloves into the syrup during the cooking process.
