Description

Discover the deliciousness of Argentinian Beef Hand Pies, also known as savory Argentine empanadas, filled with a flavorful mixture of ground beef, olives, and hard-boiled eggs.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup green olives, sliced
  • 1/2 cup hard-boiled eggs, diced
  • 1 package (14 oz) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add the ground beef. Cook until thoroughly browned, about 5-7 minutes, and drain any excess fat.
  2. Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet, sautéing until the onion is soft and translucent, roughly 3-4 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle in the cumin, smoked paprika, sea salt, and black pepper, stirring well to combine.
  4. Fold in the sliced olives and diced hard-boiled eggs, then remove the skillet from heat and allow the mixture to cool slightly.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out one of the pie crusts and use a 4-inch round cutter to create circles.
  6. Spoon approximately 1 tablespoon of the beef mixture into the center of each circle.
  7. Gently fold the dough over to form a half-moon shape, pressing the edges firmly to seal.
  8. Use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative flair.
  9. Arrange the empanadas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden color when baked.
  11. Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and flaky.
  12. Allow the empanadas to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding diced jalapeños to the beef mixture.
  • You can swap out the ground beef for ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
