Description

A delicious twist on traditional apple pie using fillo dough for a crispy texture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups thinly sliced apples (approximately 2 medium apples)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 package (8 ounces) thawed fillo dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granola
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan with cooking spray or butter.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and granulated sugar, tossing until well-coated. Let sit for about 10 minutes.
  3. Lay a sheet of fillo dough in the prepared cake pan, brushing it lightly with melted butter. Repeat with 5 more sheets, brushing each with butter.
  4. Evenly distribute half of the apple mixture over the fillo, then sprinkle half of the granola and walnuts on top.
  5. Add another 6 sheets of fillo dough on top, brushing each with melted butter.
  6. Spread the remaining apple mixture over this layer, followed by the rest of the granola and walnuts.
  7. Finish with another 6 sheets of fillo, brushing each with butter and tucking the edges into the pan.
  8. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar and sea salt, then sprinkle generously over the top layer of fillo.
  9. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the fillo is golden and crisp.
  10. Let the cake cool for about 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • For a nut-free version, omit the walnuts.
  • Ensure the fillo dough is fully thawed before use for best results.
